Return On Investment
Measuring the value of an investment is an inextricable part of business planning. Return on Investment (ROI) is used more or less as a generic term to mean defining the business value of an investment.
All of us know that every dollar counts and that we should worry about the nickels and dimes. Organizations often devote their resources to their most strategic purchases, e.g. for a manufacturer that might be raw materials, for a restaurant it could be food and beverage. However, sometimes the greatest overall cost savings comes from the multitude of mundane, non-strategic expenses incurred by businesses like office supplies, telecommunications and printing. It is important not to pass up savings just because they seem too insignificant…they all add up. Industry analysis suggests that to a typical company each dollar in cost savings has the same impact as 5 dollars in new revenue.

Gartner Group also estimates that the amount of time wasted by the average worker on document related, non-value added tasks is currently 30 percent of the total work day. They have also found that for every dollar spent producing paper forms between 30 and 60 dollars is spent in processing those forms.
A study funded by Microsoft reported that even simple intra company forms such as vacation time-off requests cost over $150 per form to process when you take into account the labor and materials for printing, completing, approving and storing. And with increasing regulatory controls, especially for government, insurance and financial industries; it looks like it will only get worse as increasing amounts of information must be extracted and processed from increasingly varied sources. The Yankee Group, a research organization, predicts that the amount of information requiring processing will grow at a rate of 20 percent per year.
